From the South

By Alex Von Stade, PM — Jr. Warden

Brethren:

Welcome to the month of September.

September marks the first month of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere and the first month of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s name comes from the Latin word “sept” for seven as it originally was the seventh month of the year until the months of January and February were added at the beginning of the year when the calendar was revised in ancient times. In old England, it was known as “harvest month” a time to finish the harvesting of crops and to start preparing for the winter months.

September marks the arrival of Labor Day and  is always celebrated the first Monday in that month. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. On June 28, 1894 President Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

For those of us who are in the Officer’s line in the Lodge, September marks the month that we need to begin learning new ritual and floorwork should we desire to advance to another role. At times, this can be a difficult endeavor, however it can be a rewarding experience for those who desire to take on the challenge. For me, being in the line means more than just memorizing ritual/floorwork; it means exemplifying the morals, values, and teachings of our fraternity, both inside and outside our Lodge

Have an eventful September and a Happy Labor Day!
