Brethren: April is now upon us and Spring is now officially here. As the cold Winter temperatures and rainfall come to a close, it is now time to think about planting gardens and planning outdoor activities once again. The word, April, is believed to be derived from the Latin words "aperio" or "aperire" meaning "to open". It is thought that both words refer to the opening of buds on trees and flowers that occur during this month. Two notable events occur during the month of April: Earth Day on April 22nd and, Arbor Day on April 25th. Earth Day began in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson and was created to raise awareness about environmental issues and to inspire action to protect our planet. Arbor Day originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. Morton believed that on this day we should be encouraged to plant a tree or several trees to honor the memory of a loved one.
Until next time, have a Happy April and enjoy the outdoors...
